Butoh is an avant guard form of Japanese dance that first appeared post-World War II. This dance includes playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics,
extreme or absurd environments and crude physical gestures.
The term means “dance of darkness”, and the form is a direct assault on the refinement and understatement so valued in Japanese aesthetics.
